UK gambling minister Stuart Andrew says 80 per cent of gamblers will “never be affected” by the lowest level of financial risk checks proposed in the white paper.
Writing for the Racing Post, Andrew – the UK Minister for Sport, Gambling and Civil Society and Minister for Equalities – said the checks will “only look at whether the highest-spending customers’ losses are a sign that their gambling is out of control.”
“Only about three per cent of the highest spending accounts will have more detailed checks,” he added.
Andrew also said that the government has begun its review of the horserace betting levy.
“We want racing to be appropriately funded and we will look at the evidence from betting and racing,” he wrote for the Racing Post.
“We will focus on what has changed since 2017 when we last reviewed the levy. That review brought online operators within scope and doubled the amount returned to racing over the subsequent year.”
