Twitch has revealed that the platform will have new rules in place to tackle gambling content that will come into effect from October 18th.
While Twitch is best known for its gaming content, the platform also houses a variety of creators that produce content across other categories.
In recent times, there has been a rise in gambling content on the Amazon-owned platform and it all came to a tipping point after a streamer named ItsSliker opened up about his addiction recently.
Twitch’s new rules ban streaming of sites Slot, Rollbit and others
Twitch revealed in a statement on Twitter on Tuesday, September 20th, the steps that will be taken to curb the streaming of gambling content.
“Gambling content on Twitch has been a big topic of discussion in the community, and something we’ve been actively reviewing since our last policy update in this area,” the platform revealed in its statement.
“Today, we want to update you on our plans. While we prohibit sharing links or referral codes to all sites that include slots, roulette, or dice games, we’ve seen some people circumvent those rules and expose our community
to potential harm.”
Announcing a policy update that’s set to take effect from October 18th, the Amazon-owned platform notified its users that it will prohibit streaming of sites like “Stake.com, Rollbit.com, Duelbits.com, and Roobet.com.”
The new rules Twitch has introduced in relation to gambling, however, will still allow the streaming of websites focused on sports betting, fantasy sports, and poker, the statement reveals.
ItsSliker confesses to gambling addiction
Twitch’s decision to introduce new rules for gambling came on the heels of the drama surrounding ItsSliker.
Sliker, who is popular for playing games like Valorant and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on the platform, confessed in one of his latest Twitch streams that he has used donations from viewers and money from friends to gamble.
The content creator, who is seen sobbing throughout the stream, started by saying: “I will come out and say, I didn’t know what to do, I lied to many people.”
“So if you haven’t heard, I borrowed money off people,” he said explaining the situation to those who were unaware.
He revealed that he started gambling after Counter Strike: Global Offensive came out. He claimed that he was initially gambling skins, but it snowballed into gambling money and taking loans from friends.
“I used to gamble a lot of my money. Basically, all my Twitch money,” ItsSliker said. “I would come across streamers and ask them if I could borrow money. I wouldn’t give them the reason obviously. Because it was gambling I would lie to them.”
Dexerto notes that the streamer also said: “This is what gambling has done for me …. s**t is dangerous. This is the epitome of a gambling addict. I used to lie to my viewers and say ‘I used to gamble a long time ago.’ It was a lie. I used to continuously gamble.”
“My initial thoughts were I will be paying them back,” he said in his stream, revealing that he never intended on cheating his fellow creators. The streamer further revealed that he still intends to pay them back.
Streamers want Twitch to ban gambling content
In the wake of ItsSliker’s confession, big streamers like Pokimane and Mizkif among others have publicly called on Twitch to ban the streaming of gambling content.
The streamers have noted that certain games have been promoting gambling.
“Twitch has rules in place for anyone promoting or streaming self-destructive behaviour,” streamer Ranboo tweeted. “The fact that promoting ACTUAL gambling is not a part of that is ridiculous as most if not all of the time it is a self-destructive behavior.
“Promoting Gambling on stream should be banned.”
Twitch has revealed that new rules will be made public to users before they are implemented on October 18th.
