Mother of six Rose says she felt she had her gambling under control because she paid her bills and kept food on the table.

It took her brother to query the amount she was borrowing from him – and that he no longer wanted to enable her behaviour.

“It took strength for him to stand up and speak his true heart to me and that’s when I had a bit of a glimpse that this is a bit of an issue – I’m actually coming home broke, going to my family to borrow money to get through the week. Even though I said I paid the bills and stuff, it’s that extra money that could have improved my quality of life,” she says.

A 2020 Household Lifestyle Survey indicated Māori were more than three times more likely to be moderate or high-risk gamblers than non-Māori and non-Pasifika groups.
