CHENNAI: Hours after the Tamil Nadu assembly adopted a resolution urging the Centre to fix a time limit for the governor to give assent to bills, governor R N Ravi on Monday gave his assent to a bill prohibiting online gambling and regulating online games.
“The governor gave his assent in the afternoon,” said a source.
The assembly readopted the bill on March 23, after the governor returned the bill to speaker M Appavu on March 6 — 131 days of the passage of it.
Incidentally, the governor promulgated an ordinance on October 1 after the cabinet approved it subsequent to the recommendations of the Justice (retired) K Chandru-led committee. The governor, without giving assent to the bill, sought clarifications on November 23 and the state responded within 24 hours. A delegation led by law minister S Regupathy called on the governor on December 1 and clarified.
