Supreme Court Minister suspends nursing floor wage that would be financed by gambling

Minister of the Federal Supreme Court Roberto Barroso suspended the nursing salary floor in an injunction and gave 60 days for the federal government, states and DF, in addition to sector entities, to provide information on the financial impact, risks of layoffs and possible reduction in the quality of the service provided.

Barroso’s decision was given in a lawsuit filed by CNSaúde (National Confederation of Health, Hospitals and Establishments and Services).

During a vote on the matter, both in the Chamber of Deputies and in the Federal Senate, parliamentarians defended the floor wage and indicated that the source to fund the increase for the category could come from the collection of taxes generated by gambling.

The president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL) said that he will continue to fight for nursing professionals. Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) will meet this Tuesday (6), with Minister Barroso, of the STF, to discuss the decision.

Among government allies, the argument is that the Senate could approve the project that provides for the legalization of gambling, which has already passed the Chamber and is stalled in the Senate.

The justification of leaders of the center who defend this project is that the tax revenue from the sector, once legalized, could be reverted to the SUS table. The Senate, however, resists this proposal.

Barroso’s determination of temporary suspension of the salary floor for nursing will still be analyzed by the Plenary of the STF.
