Start of NFL season highlights growing concerns over sports gambling addiction in North Dakota

FARGO — With the NFL season officially underway, an expert says sports gambling addiction is on the rise in North Dakota.

WDAY News talked with Lisa Vig, a gambling addiction counselor for Gambler’s Choice, which is a part of the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services.

While cases have been limited due to sports betting in North Dakota only being legal at Tribal Casinos, Vig says they’ve recently been seeing more people seeking treatment for sports gambling.

She says this has led to a younger demographic asking for help with gambling addiction.

“In previous years our average age group was maybe 45 to 60. And now we’re beginning to see more individuals in their 20s and 30s,” Vig said.

Vig also says the start of a new season can be especially difficult for those living with addiction.

“For people that have gambling addictions, they’re already identifying, this is kind of a concerning time for me. It’s a temptation to return to gambling or to want to try it and see if I can be in control of it,” Vig said.
