“While there is no affiliation between the Swans and the aforementioned podcast, we have raised concerns directly with the Swans, who are treating the matter very seriously,” a spokesperson for the Office of Responsible
Gambling said.
The spokesperson said the regulator had “confidence in their ongoing commitment to Reclaim the Game”.
The Sydney Swans have not commented on the podcast, or whether Papley had cleared the project with the club. Papley is a member of the team’s leadership group.
The star forward has a recurring segment on Sports radio SEN where he talks about horse racing. But Papley’s new podcast goes much further, providing tips on racing, golf and NRL. The tips are posted online with the tagline #Betuntilithurts. The first episode claims the duo do not gamble on the AFL.
“When the gates open if your arse doesn’t quiver just a little bit, you haven’t had enough on,” Papley says in an introduction. At another point, the professional bookmaker, Jack Dickens, remarks, “gamble responsibly and it would be responsible, if possible, to rort each and every promo tool available to you out there”.
The Swans have claimed to be on the front line against the influx of sports betting money around the AFL. “As a football club we believe it is extremely important to provide education to staff, players and fans about the risks associated with gambling,” Swans chief executive Tom Harley said earlier in the year.
The saturation of gambling advertising has led to threats of a crackdown from the federal government, which is considering proposals to ban or restrict betting ads around Australian sport.
