Sandro Tonali escapes extended ban for breaking FA’s gambling rules

The Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will not face an extended ban despite further breaches of FA gambling rules, including betting on his own team.

Tonali, who is serving a ten-month global suspension from football after betting on matches in Italy, has been given a further suspended two-month ban and fined £20,000 by an independent regulatory commission after admitting 50 further offences between August 12, 2003, and October 12, 2023, after he joined Newcastle from AC Milan.

The 23-year-old admitted to betting on four Newcastle games, for amounts less than £10,000. In each instance, the Italy midfielder bet on his side to win.

He admitted to placing an accumulator bet involving either Newcastle to beat Brighton & Hove Albion on September 2, 2023, or Newcastle
