Report: NFL's gambling inquiry to expose more than just Isaiah Rodgers

Less than 24 hours after it was revealed the NFL was investigating Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers for betting on NFL games, SI.com’s Albert Breer reported that the league isn’t just looking into the 25-year-old defensive back.

While the NFL hasn’t officially commented on Rodgers’ status, it’s expected that he will be suspended indefinitely and miss the entire 2023 season for violating the league’s gambling policy, which prohibits players from engaging in any form of sports betting from an NFL facility or betting on any NFL-related events including games, the combine and the draft.

“Rodgers isn’t the only player the NFL is investigating on the gambling front,” Breer wrote. “Rumors have swirled for weeks now that the league’s latest probe into sports betting could implicate a healthy number of guys from across the league. [NFL headquarters] is taking this very, very seriously, knowing that it’ll set a tone for how these matters are handled going forward. It’s also a lot more complicated than it used to be, with the league now heavily involved in the business of gambling, with gaming partnerships left and right.”

Rodgers is the seventh player in the last two months to find himself in hot water with the league over gambling violations. The NFL suspended five players in April, including Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams, for violating the gambling policy, and The Athletic recently reported that a fifth Lions player was also being investigated.

Williams and Stanley Berryhill were suspended six games each for betting on non-NFL games from an NFL facility, while Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore and Shaka Toney were suspended indefinitely. Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended for the entire 2022 season for betting on Atlanta Falcons games when he was a member of the team.

Rodgers issued a statement via social media on Monday night owning up to the allegations and apologizing for his actions.
