Proposed gambling reform to help return stolen money to victims

A bill that would enable the Supreme Court to recover funds stolen for gambling purposes will be introduced to the Tasmanian Parliament this year.

The gambling reform legislation, to be unveiled today, is spearheaded by Independent MP Kristie Johnston.

“There is no good reason gambling companies should benefit from the proceeds of crime. It’s wrong,” she said.

“Money stolen to gamble should, where possible, be returned to the victim.”

The legislation would also require gambling operators to take action when they suspect customers are using stolen funds.

“My bill is part of an effort to create laws nationally and in each state to address this injustice,” Johnston said.

Tasmanians lost $16,485,808 on gaming machines in December last year, an increase from $16,001,402 in November.

January 2025 player expenditure totalled $16,097,396, according to Tasmanian Liquor and Gaming Commission statistics.
