Thiruvananthapuram: Pinarayi Vijayan govt is gambling with the lives of students without solving Plus One seat crisis, said KPCC president K Sudhakaran on Monday.
“More than half-a-lakh students have been denied Plus One admissions. Children from poor families are suffering the most due to govt’s unscientific seat reform policy,” said Sudhakaran.
“Instead of increasing number of batches corresponding to the rise in number of students in each stream, seats are being increased by 30% in govt schools and 20% in aided schools.As a result, over 65 students are forced to sit in a crowded classroom. This will affect the learning ability of children. Many of our students fail in competitive exams for higher education after Plus Two due to the deterioration in quality of education at higher-secondary level. Pinarayi govt is fully responsible for this,” he said.
Govt which takes credit for a higher pass percentage in SSLC examination has miserably failed in providing the environment for such children to study, he alleged. “This year’s Plus Two result is the worst-ever result since 2010. Last year, the pass percentage was 82.95%, which reduced to 78.69% this year. Instead of finding the cause and resolving it, govt is making unnecessary claims. During UDF govt, the maximum number of students in a classroom was 50. But the subsequent LDF govt raised it by 30% every year and the number of students in each class is now 65. This has affected the quality of education,” he added.
By adding seats of unaided schools, govt is claiming that there is no crisis in Plus One seats in the state, Sudhakaran said. “Children from Malabar region suffer the most due to lack of enough seats for Plus One courses. In Malappuram district, while 79,730 candidates passed SSLC examination, the number of seats in govt and aided schools considered for allotment is only 59,690, a shortfall of 20,040 seats in that district alone,” he said.
“Similar is the case of Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. The seat crisis will double with the release of CBSE results. At least 230 additional batches should be sanctioned. Otherwise, there will be a situation where a good percentage of students will be denied Plus One admission in the state,” he added.
