Pacific Northwest gamblers might be tempted to run off to Vegas, but they might be well enough off at home, a new study found.
Oregon ranked as one of the most gambling-friendly states in the U.S., according to a new study by gambling news site Casino Reports, coming in at No. 7 nationwide.
The study looked at the number of gambling places and gaming machines per state, as well as the legal status of various forms of gambling. The No. 1 spot, unsurprisingly, went to Nevada, which has 148,644 gaming machines, equivalent to about 1 for every 15 gambling-aged residents, according to the study.
Oregon has considerably fewer machines, with only 18,400, but the state’s 2,075 gambling locations were enough to push it into the top 10, according to Casino Reports. Oregon ranked just behind Illinois and just ahead of Pennsylvania. It was the only West Coast state in the top 10 on the list, with Washington ranking 20th and California coming in at 31st.
In addition to gaming at Oregon’s nine tribal casinos, gamblers are able to play Oregon Lottery slot machines that are found at bars and restaurants across the state. The lottery is Oregon’s second-largest funding source after personal income tax, bringing in $15 billion since 1985. Meanwhile, the tribe-run casinos generate $410 million in tax revenues and payments to local governments, according to the American Gaming Association.
The state has also moved to find new avenues of gambling revenue, including a partnership with Draft Kings.
It all adds up to a favorable environment for gambling, the study said, making Oregon one of the top places to gamble in the West.
