Detroit Lions’ 2022 first-round pick Jameson Williams was among five players suspended by the NFL for violating the league’s gambling policy, the league announced Friday.
Williams, a wide receiver, along with Lions’ wide receivers Stanley Berryhill and Quintez Cephus, safety C.J. Moore and Washington Commanders’ defensive end Shaka Toney all received suspensions of varying lengths by the league.
Williams, the No. 12 pick in the 2022 NFL draft, and Berryhill each received six-game suspensions. Williams and Berryhill were reportedly suspended for mobile betting on college football game that occurred at the Lions’ training facility in Allen Park, MI. The league prohibits any betting while at a team facility or on team-related travel.
The two did not bet on NFL games, the team said.
Both players are eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason activities, including preseason games. Because the Lions’ regular season schedule has yet to be announced, they’ll be eligible to return at sometime in October.
Cephus, Moore and Toney, who were caught betting on NFL games, received indefinite suspensions of at least a year. The three cannot apply for reinstatement until April 2024 at the earliest.
The Lions released Cephus and Moore upon learning of the suspensions.
