Over the past couple of years, the NFL has really cracked down on players betting on sports. The most notable suspension came when Calvin Ridley was banned for a whole season for betting on NFL games, including those of his own team at the time, the Atlanta Falcons.
This offseason, more suspensions were handed out as the league continues to place an emphasis on cutting out the behavior before it becomes too widespread in their eyes. With a newfound focus on the topic, the NFL decided to revise its gambling policy on Friday.
The NFL’s new gambling policy
First and foremost, betting on any sport while working is still forbidden, but the punishments are now less severe for non-NFL sports betting.
For gambling on NFL games, these are the punishments.
- One-year suspension for betting on NFL games
- Two-year suspension for betting on NFL games of own team
- “Game fixing” will result in a lifetime ban
For gambling on other sports not involving the NFL while in the workplace.
- First violation: two-game suspension without pay
- Second violation: six-game suspension without pay
- Third violation: suspension without pay for at least one year
Given the new policy, the NFL made the decision to reinstate two players suspended for gambling earlier than expected. Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams and Tennessee Titans tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere will be able to rejoin their teams on Monday. They had both been suspended for six games during the offseason.
