Earlier this week, ProFootball Talk’s Mike Florio reported that one NFL player lost $8 million gambling last year, citing a league source. The report did not specify if the wagers placed violated the league’s policy or if the player was one of the five already suspended this offseason for violations.

The NFL has a sports gambling problem. The latest proof comes via that anonymous player who cannot stop himself from losing so much money.

Calvin Ridley learned this the hard way, getting suspended for the entire 2022 season in a shocking turn of events. But we had no clue how bad things would truly get.

On Friday, ProFootball Talk’s Mike Florio then dropped another report while alluding that he has been told the name of the player who lost that money.

Five NFL players, including four from the Detroit Lions, were suspended in April for breaches of the league’s gambling policy. Shortly after, Indianapolis Colts cornerback Isaiah Rodgers drew criticism for allegedly making “100 bets” on various sporting events that also reportedly included NFL games.

All of this shows the volatility of gambling and how some cannot contain themselves while others will still take chances with their career and gamble money when it is against the rules to do so.

Things are only getting worse.

Chances are, since this player is in the NFL, making at least six figures, he can probably overcome an $8 million loss. However, we don’t know how bad of a gambling problem this unknown guy might have and the money he has accumulated can certainly disappear.

Eventually, the house always wins.

If you choose to bet, do so with extreme caution.
