As MLB’s investigation into the gambling allegations involving Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, the Los Angeles Dodgers are keeping their focus on the field for the start of the 2024 regular season.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts definitively said “no” when asked if the Ohtani situation has been a distraction for the club.

“We’re just focused on business,” the seven-time All-Star said. “Taking care of business and that’s all we keep first.”

MLB announced on March 22 it had opened an investigation into the allegations surrounding Mizuhara. This came two days after the Los Angeles Times reported Mizuhara was accused of using “millions of dollars” of Ohtani’s money to place bets with a bookmaker in California.

Matthew Bowyer, a bookie based in Orange County, is under federal investigation for running an illegal bookmaking operation.

Ohtani said through translator Will Ireton in a statement on Monday he “never bet on baseball or any other sports or asked someone to do it on my behalf” and Mizuhara “has been stealing money from my account and has told lies.”

Per ESPN’s Tisha Thompson, the Dodgers fired Mizuhara amid questions about $4.5 million in wire transfers from Ohtani’s bank account to the bookmaking operation run by Bowyer.

Thompson noted a spokesman for Ohtani initially told ESPN the two-time AL MVP transferred the funds to cover Mizuhara’s debt, and Mizuhara sat down with the outlet for a 90-minute interview in which he laid out his account “in great detail,” but the spokesman later disavowed Mizuhara’s account shortly before ESPN was preparing publish its story.

Mizuhara had been Ohtani’s translator for his entire MLB career. Their relationship dates back a decade when Ohtani was a rookie for the Nippon-Ham Fighters in 2013.

The Dodgers opened the season last week with a two-game series against the San Diego Padres in South Korea. They will play their first home game on Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals at 4:10 p.m. ET.
