SAN ANTONIO – A man was arrested for shooting and killing a man outside an illegal gambling location on the South Side.

After months of investigating, San Antonio Police identified the shooter as Michael Rene Gaitan, 30, who is charged with the murder of 42-year-old Roland Garcia.

The deadly shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 26, 2023 along Hayden Drive near Old Pearsall Road.

When police arrived, they found Garcia with a gunshot wounds to his head and stomach behind a home used as a gambling house.

Paramedics performed life-saving procedures, but Garcia pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the police report, it was alleged that Garcia had stolen money from one of the gambling machines the day before the fatal shooting. A witness told police that Gaitan hit Garcia in the head because of the alleged stolen money.

A gun fell out of Gaitan’s jacket and when Garcia tried to grab it, Gaitan picked it up and shot Garcia.

Gaitan was identified by several witnesses.

He is being held in the Bexar County Jail on $250,000 bond.
