The Iowa State athletics department could be facing a massive scandal as allegations of online sports wagering by members of their various programs raise their ugly head.
On Monday, the Iowa State athletics department confirmed its awareness in allegations against 15 of their student-athletes. In a statement, the school announced that it will be taking “appropriate actions” to have the matters resolved.
“Iowa State University and its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is aware of online wagering allegations involving approximately 15 of our active student-athletes from the sports of football, wrestling and track & field in violation of NCAA rules. The university has notified the NCAA and will take the appropriate actions to resolve these issues.”
The affected programs include the football, wrestling and track & field teams, with the former potentially getting hit ultra hard depending on what is found.
Iowa State has been enjoying one of its best periods in football history over the past five years under the leadership of head coach Matt Campbell. This past year was a bit of a setback as they struggled to adapt to life post-Brock Purdy and Breece Hall.
But suspensions could be the minimum that the program is facing.
Will Iowa State face any serious repercussions from this?
