The ACP stated that a complaint was received from the family of the deceased, and the body was sent for a postmortem examination. The arrival of the postmortem report would clarify the cause of death, he said, adding that further investigation into the matter was in progress.
Saroj, who worked as a labourer to earn a livelihood, lived in Chaubeypur with Meera Saroj and sons Shivam Saroj (16) and Shubham Saroj (17). He left home on Saturday evening but did not return that night.
His family searched for him until late at night. On Monday morning, some villagers noticed his body near the Ganga Bank and alerted the Chaubeypur police.
Locals and his family suspected that Saroj was assaulted in some dispute after losing in gambling, and the assailants hid his body near the riverbank after killing him and fled the scene.
