Jameson Williams will begin his second season by serving a six-game suspension for a gambling violation.
Per ESPN’s Eric Woodyard, the Detroit Lions wide receiver said he felt “sick” and “hurt” when learning of the ruling last month.
“It hit me out the blue and it hit a couple other players around the league and on my team out the blue,” Williams said. “I wasn’t aware of this situation, but as it happened, I took it on the chin.”
Although Williams didn’t bet on NFL games, he placed wagers on his cell phone at the team’s facility. The 22-year-old wasn’t aware of the policy and didn’t recall placing the bets, but he’s not appealing the suspension.
“They gave me six games and we left it at that,” he said. “I just look forward to coming back Week 7, getting back with [the] team out there and playing the game.”
Williams declared that he’s “a football player” and “not a gambler,” and he’ll use the unfortunate situation as a learning experience.
This will mark the second straight season the Lions will wait for Williams, who missed the first 11 games of his rookie campaign recovering from a torn ACL suffered during the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The No. 12 pick took his only catch to the house for a 41-yard touchdown.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Williams is “already miles ahead” of where he was last spring. He’s eligible to make his 2023 debut against the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 22.
