Huge changes coming to laws around pubs and pokies

One Australian state will soon face huge changes to their pubs and clubs as part of an initiative to reduce gambling harm.

NSW venues with more than 20 poker machines in operation will require a responsible gambling officer to “help identify patrons at risk of harm or displaying concerning gambling behaviour” and then refer the patron to support services.

NSW minister for gaming and racing David Harris said the changes — which come into effect on July 1 — are “the next important step”.

“One in three people who gamble regularly are considered to be moderate or high-risk gamblers according to the Problem Gambling Severity Index,” Harris said.

“The introduction of Responsible Gambling Officers is the next important step in supporting people who may be experiencing gambling harm.”

“They will be across pubs and clubs where gambling is happening, and be alert to patrons at risk of harm or displaying concerning gambling behaviour and link them into the support they need, such as the GambleAware hotline.”

The 1152 venues that have the approval to operate more than 20 gaming machines will also be required to keep a gambling incident register and a gaming plan of management.

Venues with more than 100 gaming machines will be required to have additional officers.

Western Australia’s gambling laws are much stricter, with poker machines only allowed in the casino.
