Gov't wants to stop influencers from promoting online gambling | NoypiGeeks

The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) said that they may soon stop influencers from promoting online gambling.

This is after the recent issue involving GCash where a number of users reported losing money from their accounts. The e-wallet service already reported that they’ve returned the lost funds back to their customers.

To prevent unauthorized withdrawals, experts suggest never clicking suspicious links from unknown sources, which could lead to stolen data that will allow culprits to have access to a user’s e-wallet service.

While the recent GCash fiasco is still being investigated, technology expert Art Samaniego shared on ABS-CBN News that they saw a “common denominator” on some compromised accounts.

Apparently, most of the victims had a gambling app installed on their devices — apps that are being endorsed by influencers.

Samaniego explained that the said apps require users to input their GCash MPIN, so when they top-up their gambling accounts, it will credit directly to their e-wallet — no OTP required.

With this, USEC. Alex Ramos of the CICC said that their next target is to stop influencers from promoting online gambling.

“Ang next nation na titirahin dito will be the influencers because apparently, alam mo, mga milyon, daang libo ‘yung kanilang mga followers, dapat i-take down din ‘yung kanilang mra promotion on gambling.”

Cybersecurity advocates are also urging e-wallet services to strengthen their security features and make it easier for victims to report related incidents.
