Jakarta (ANTARA) – The government is taking concerted measures across sectors and pursuing the optimization of digital technologies to crack down on online gambling activities, Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) Minister Meutya Hafid has said.
“Online gambling has not only caused state losses, but also led to far-reaching social impacts,” she said, according to a press release issued by her ministry on Tuesday.
During a meeting with the presidential special advisor for political and security affairs, Wiranto, at her office on Monday, Hafid said that her ministry has been tackling online gambling as part of the cross-institutional online gambling eradication desk.
In November last year, she informed, the government decided to set up seven desks focused on the seven priority goals of President Prabowo Subianto pertaining to political and security affairs.
The Komdigi Ministry was assigned to the online gambling eradication and cybersecurity and personal data protection desks, she added.
She underlined that cross-sectoral collaboration, supported by the use of technology, is essential for effective anti-online gambling measures.
Wiranto seconded the minister’s viewpoint, saying that collaboration between government institutions, technology firms, and the public is key for creating a safer digital ecosystem.
“The concrete actions taken by the online gambling eradication and cybersecurity and personal data protection desks are expected to help Indonesia fortify its digital security, enabling the country to deal with digital threats effectively,” he expounded.
He stressed that Indonesia needs to take law enforcement measures, cut access to gambling sites, and build public digital literacy to deal with online gambling threats.
“We need to act quickly and firmly based on clear regulations while ensuring effective law enforcement to tighten the noose on online gambling activities,” he said.
He added that the government will strengthen regulations and apply more sophisticated digital technology to prevent data leaks and thwart cyberattacks targeting state institutions.
