Dallas Cowboys ex Dez Bryant is confounded by the NFL’s seemingly hypocritical rules on gambling.
FRISCO – Indisputably, the NFL suspensions of a handful of players who violated the league’s gambling policy has been done according to rules that the NFLPA agreed to … which means the players signed on for the bylaws.
But to Dez Bryant, the logic behind the rule is worthy of dispute, with the former Dallas Cowboys standout reacting on social media by stating, “This is insane … Make it make sense!”
The top name involved is Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams, who received a six-game suspension. Others were suspended indefinitely, and two of them who were on the Lions roster, Quintez Cephus and CJ Moore, have been released from the team.
Again, the rules are clear. But are the rules also hypocritical? That is the assertion of Bryant, who writes, “So you telling me owners suffer no consequences for tanking games, and players can lose one year eligibility for gambling? Make it make sense!”
Bryant’s point on tanking: It is, in a way, “fixing a game.” … and those who claim that “has no relation to gambling” are missing the boat. Additionally, and an even clear point: The NFL, which once frowned on being associated with gambling in any way, has now embraced the concept, so much so that the league has partnered with sites like FanDuel and DraftKings
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said on the “Pat McAfee Show,” “The way to stop players gambling on sports is by doing what the NFL did today. The message is pretty clear that if you gamble on NFL games, it’s gonna be a year suspension at least.”
But if the NFL was truly and fully against participation in gambling, the NFL wouldn’t be in the business of profiting from same. And that is where the real hypocrisy rests cozily.
