Gambling Commission talks through next white paper consultations

Gambling Commission executive director Tim Miller has said the UK regulator wants to “push on” and combine responses to the first set of white paper consultations with another tranche this autumn.

Speaking at the Regulating the Game Conference on Monday, Miller said the UKGC has received over 1,800 responses so far to its four summer consultations, which close on October 18.

He called for “as many as possible” to get involved in discussions on age verification in premises, financial risk and vulnerability checks, features which increase intensity of play on non-slots casino games and cross-selling.

Miller said that the next set of consultations, while not finalised, will include the use of socially responsible incentives including bonuses and free bets.

Gambling management tools like online deposit limits and whether they should be mandatory and opt-out rather than opt-in will also be on the agenda.

Miller said that combining work on the results on the current consultations with new discussions is “achievable,” adding that the approach “allows us to balance implementation of the white paper recommendations with the needs of others whose views we want as part of those consultations.”

Miller also said the UKGC will launch the Gambling Survey of Great Britain “early next year.”

“When it’s fully rolled out it will be the largest survey of its type anywhere in the world and will become the new gold standard for participation and prevalence data in Great Britain, with updated questions for the digital age and predictable, regular data for study,” he said.
