Political Editor Andrew Clennell broke news of the delay on Sunday Agenda after government sources divulged that the gambling reforms would not progress this year. 

The delay has come as Communications Minister Michelle Rowland abandoned her controversial misinformation bill after failing to gain Senate support.

Ms Rowland has met industry resistance to the gambling ad reform and logistical challenges in finalising the policy.

Employment Minister Murray Watt told reporters on Sunday, “There is simply is not going to be enough time this week to pass that legislation.”

Asked about the delay, Trade Minister Don Farrell told Sky News “sometimes it always takes longer than you think”.

“But Michelle is is an excellent minister. She knows what she wants in this area and she’ll continue to have discussions,” he said. 

Concerns have been raised about the impact of stripping traditional media and sporting codes of the funding generated from betting companies. 

The proposed reforms include a ban on online gambling ads, restrictions on gambling ads during sporting matches and a cap of two gambling ads per hour on television. 

These measures have been aimed at addressing concerns about the saturation of gambling ads in sport and their impact on children. 

A parliamentary committee report had previously recommended sweeping changes, including establishing a national online gambling regulator.
