Five current and former athletes at Iowa and Iowa State universities pleaded guilty to lesser charges Tuesday and Wednesday related to a state gambling investigation involving sports teams at both schools, according to documents obtained by The Athletic.

Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers, former offensive lineman Dodge Sauser and current offensive lineman Jake Remsburg all pleaded guilty Wednesday to underage gambling and received $645 fines, according to Story County court filings.

Former Iowa kicker Aaron Blom and former Iowa baseball player Gehrig Christensen also pleaded guilty to the same charge and received the same fine, according to documents filed in Johnson County. All five athletes were initially charged with tampering with records, an aggravated misdemeanor that carried up to a two-year prison term.

Here are the specifics involved in these cases:

According to the charging affidavit, Dekkers was accused of placing 26 wagers on Iowa State events, including a 2021 football game against Oklahoma State. Dekkers, who was Iowa State’s starting quarterback in 2022, admitted in a plea agreement that he wagered on Iowa State football while a team member. Dekkers officially remains a member of the Cyclones’ roster but has not participated in team functions this year.

Remsburg, who is serving a six-game NCAA suspension for his involvement, admitted to making six wagers on NCAA events, according to his plea document.

Sauser, who formerly was a reserve offensive lineman, admitted he bet on four Iowa State games in which he did not play.

Blom’s plea agreement included an admission of gambling on a 2021 men’s basketball game between Kansas and TCU. In the Johnson County charging affidavit, Blom was accused of betting on eight Iowa sporting events, including “under total points” on the 2021 Iowa-Iowa State game. He no longer is on the Iowa football roster.

Christensen initially was accused of wagering on 23 Iowa sporting events. He admitted to placing an underage bet on Nov. 7, 2021.

Other athletes charged with the original offenses have cases pending in Iowa district courts. In Story County, Big 12 champion wrestler Paniro Johnson and former Iowa State football player Eyi Uwazurike have requested jury trials for Oct. 24. Both are charged with tampering with records and newer charges of identity theft. Uwazurike, who is suspended from the NFL’s Denver Broncos for gambling, is accused of taking less than $1,500, which is an aggravated misdemeanor. Johnson is accused of taking more than $1,500 but less than $10,000, which is a Class D felony.

Former Iowa State running back Jirehl Brock, former defensive tackle Isaiah Lee and current tight end DeShawn Hanika have waived their preliminary hearings.

In Johnson County, former Iowa basketball player Ahron Ulis (now at Nebraska) and former Iowa football players Arland Bruce IV (Oklahoma State) and Reggie Bracy (Troy) have requested jury trials for their gambling-related charges. Former Iowa receiver Jack Johnson has waived his preliminary hearing.
