KUCHING (Sept 8): The relevant enforcement agencies need to take firmer action against those operating illegal online gambling businesses in shoplots throughout Sarawak, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak information chief Tay Wei Wei.
In a statement, Tay said many public complaints had been received against such shops, which now operate in rural areas.
He alleged many of these outlets look like retail outlets but are in fact being frequented by those who come and deposit money into gambling accounts on their smartphones.
“The number of these illegal gambling shops seem to have mushroomed. Not only do they operate in urban areas, but they are also found in rural areas.
“In the past, such activities were conducted secretly but now it seems they are more daring and without fear of the authorities,” he said in the statement.
Tay, who was recently appointed as special officer to the Home Minister for Sarawak and Sabah regions, said such illegal activities must be eradicated to prevent social ills.
“The tax money collected can be used by the government to repair dilapidated schools, clinics and hospitals,” he said.
