Dutton slams Albanese government for UN abstention

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has condemned the Albanese government’s decision to abstain from a controversial United Nations resolution against Israel.

Earlier on Thursday, Australia abstained from a United Nations vote calling for sanctions against Israel and demanding a withdrawal of troops from the Gaza Strip.

Mr Dutton has asserted Australia needs to align itself more closely with its traditional allies, particularly the United States, and should have voted no.

“They should have voted with the United States. That much is very clear,” Mr Dutton told 2GB Radio on Thursday.

The United States opposed the motion, along with a number of Australia’s close Pacific partners including Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

Mr Dutton claimed former governments – including the Hawke, Howard, and Abbott administrations – would have supported Israel by voting no.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong defended the abstention on Thursday and said Australia was compelled to take the stance after several amendments were rejected.

Despite the United States urging Australia to vote against the resolution, UN Ambassador James Larsen abstained at the General Assembly in New York.

Mr Dutton criticised the decision by the Albanese government as harmful to the country’s international relationships.

“I think Penny Wong here is – and along with the Prime Minister – frankly, damaging our relationship very significantly with Israel, with the United States and with like-minded partners,” he said.

The Liberal leader claimed Labor was pandering in their international diplomacy decisions in a bid to win Western Sydney and Greens’ voters who support Palestine.

“At the moment the government’s trying to find political opportunity because they’re desperately worried about losing votes to the Greens,” he said.

“They want to stop that haemorrhaging of the Labor Party core vote, and they’re making some weird decisions, but some bad and dangerous decisions – and this is the latest one.”
