The Dutch football association, the KNVB, says the proposal to ban “‘untargeted” online gambling advertising will cost it €70m and is unworkable.
The Dutch government has proposed that from January 1 next year, the ban would apply to broadcasting, print, internet advertising and, in time, sports sponsorships.
A number of responses have been submitted on the proposals, reports news service Gaming in Holland, and the football association one is notable.
It claims that the proposals will cost Dutch football €70m in lost revenues. Also commenting is the trade association VAN Kansspelen, representing Dutch gambling businesses.
The VAN, among whom it numbers the country’s sophisticated arcades industry, has said that the exception for land-based gambling is justified. On the other hand, the Consumentenbond, the consumer organisation, has said that only a full gambling advertising ban would work.
The submissions also include some from trade associations that had taken legal advice that suggests the proposed ban is not legally enforceable.
