A tragic event unfolded in Mutandavadze Village, located in the Chief Mazhetese area of Sovelele, Mwenezi when a man fatally stabbed a shebeen owner. The incident occurred following accusations of theft after the man lost US$80 in a gambling game at the Shebeen owner’s premises.
The unfortunate incident took place after the accused lost US$80 while gambling at the home of the deceased. The accused believed that the shebeen owner had stolen his money and bicycle, which led to a deadly confrontation.
Police Statement
Kudakwashe Dhewa, the Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson, confirmed the occurrence and emphasized the importance of resolving disputes peacefully. He urged the public to avoid resorting to violence, especially under the influence of alcohol, and to respect the value of human life.
“We have received a report regarding a murder in Mwenezi where an individual was killed during a drinking and gambling session. We appeal to the community to refrain from using violence to settle disputes, particularly when intoxicated. The sanctity of life must always be upheld,” Dhewa stated.

Sequence of Events
According to sources familiar with the case, the incident happened on May 27. The deceased, Wellington Zhou (38), was engaging in drinking and gambling activities with the accused, Takura Hove. Initially, Hove borrowed US$40 from Zhou and lost it in the gambling game. He then returned home, fetched another US$40, and lost that amount as well.
In the early hours of the following day, around 2 am, the two men were still at Zhou’s place when an argument erupted. Hove accused Zhou of stealing his Itel cellphone, US$100, and his bicycle. In a fit of rage, Hove pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed Zhou in the chest, resulting in Zhou’s immediate death.

Police Investigation
The incident was promptly reported to the police, who responded to the scene. Upon their arrival, they discovered the alleged stolen cellphone in Zhou’s pocket and the bicycle at his residence. This discovery has added complexity to the ongoing investigation.
