The Indianapolis Colts revealed on Monday that a player on the team is the subject of a new investigation into potential gambling policy violations. The identity of the player was previously not known.
But it has been revealed to be cornerback Isaiah Rodgers.
Rodgers played a number of different and impactful roles for the Colts last season. He started nine games at cornerback in 2022 and was the team’s primary kick returner.
ESPN’s Stephen Holder and David Purdum broke the news that “multiple sources familiar with the investigation” confirmed that the player in question with the investigation is Rodgers.
The NFL has been cracking down on players involved in gambling as of late. The most notable player recently disciplined for gambling violations was Jacksonville Jaguars star Calvin Ridley, who was notably suspended for the entirety of the 2022-23 season. The latest group of players involved in gambling probes were five Detroit Lions players, including former first-round pick Jameson Williams.
Rodgers is accused of some heavy violations that could result in a serious suspension, or even worse. Approximately 100 bets were reportedly placed on the sportsbook account made by an associate of Rodgers over an undisclosed amount of time, including bets on Colts games.
If Rodgers is indeed found to be involved in everything that he is being accused of, we may see a similar suspension to what Ridley received. Ridley was also found to have bet on Atlanta Falcons games in the 2021-22 season while he was sidelined with an injury. It is perhaps even worse in Rodgers’ case, as he played in 15 of 17 Colts games last season.
