CANTON ‒ Police said they searched a Cleveland Avenue NW vape store this week and seized 10 gambling machines, drugs, a handgun and $4,276 in cash.

The owner of the business said he was renting the space, the gambling machines belonged to his landlord, and the drugs and gun belonged to people who were helping him move. And that only about $2,500 of the cash was his.

Police indicated they have not yet filed criminal charges related to the search of Mo Vapes at 1816 Cleveland Ave. NW around 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

A statement issued by the Canton Police Department Friday said officers of the Coordinated Response Team supported by the Stark County Metro Narcotics Unit and the Canton Regional SWAT team conducted the search.

Police said besides the 10 gambling machines and $4,276, they seized more than 3 pounds of marijuana, two ounces of cocaine, 24 ounces of the prescription medication Promethazine and a Springfield XD .45-caliber handgun.

Montasar A. Itayem, owner of Mo Vapes, has not been charged with any crime related to the search. He said he began leasing the space for his vapes shop about seven months ago.

He said the owner of the building had slot machines in a room adjoining his store’s space and people, apparently on behalf of the owner, would often come to collect money. Itayem said he knew the machines were illegal and was in the process of moving his store’s contents out of the business into a truck. He said some of the people who came to help him move brought backpacks and the police found the drugs, medication and gun in five of those backpacks.

The building’s owner is linked to an address of a home in Akron, according to the Stark County Auditor’s records. A phone number for the owner could not be found.

Itayem said after what’s happened, he’s decided to shut down his business.

“There’s no more Mo Vapes,” he said.
