Five NFL players, including four from the Detroit Lions, have been suspended for violations of the league’s gambling policy, the NFL announced on Friday.
Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety CJ Moore, as well as Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney, have all been suspended indefinitely, but for at least one year.
Lions wide receivers Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill have been suspended for six games apiece.
Shortly after the suspensions were handed down, the Lions announced that they have released Cephus and Moore.
The suspensions for Cephus and Moore resulted from the two players betting on NFL games. The NFL did not indicate whether the games involved the Lions.
Williams and Berryhill, meanwhile, did not bet on NFL games but placed bets from an NFL facility. Their six-game suspensions will start on the final roster cut date.
Berryhill, Cephus and Moore all played sparingly for the Lions last season.
Losing Williams for the first six games of the season is likely the biggest blow. The No. 12 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft missed the first 11 games of last season while recovering from a torn ACL. He caught just one pass, although it went for a 41-yard touchdown.
