BetMGM denies allegations that Bruno Mars owes $50 million in gambling debt, partnership rooted in mutual respect
Mars, 38, was accused of owing $50 million in gambling debt at a Las Vegas casino. BetMGM’s parent company has come to the songwriter’s defense and dismissed the rumors as “completely false.”
In a statement provided to EW in March, a spokesperson for MGM Resorts International said, “We’re proud of our relationship with Bruno Mars, one of the world’s most thrilling and dynamic performers. From his shows at Dolby Live at Park MGM to the new Pinky Ring lounge at Bellagio, Bruno’s brand of entertainment attracts visitors from around the globe.”
The statement added, “MGM and Bruno’s partnership is longstanding and rooted in mutual respect. Any speculation otherwise is completely false; he has no debt with MGM. Together, we are excited to continue creating unforgettable experiences for our guests.”
The response came just days after a NewsNation report quoted an unnamed source as saying that MGM “basically own[s]” Mars because of the millions in gambling debt he allegedly accumulated.
Mars allegedly makes $90 million a year, $1.5 million per night from his residencies at MGM
According to the source, the singer makes $90 million a year ($1.5 million per night) from his residencies at MGM and was planning to pay the company back as soon as possible.
Mars’ representatives for Mars didn’t immediately respond to EW’s request for comment in March.
Of course, the Honolulu native began his contract with the hotel in 2016.
During his first year of residency, the “Just the Way You Are” singer revealed that he used to play poker to pay his rent before his music career kicked off.
“For a little while, yeah,” he told James Corden during a “Carpool Karaoke” segment on Corden’s now-canceled “Late Late Show.”
The singer is also known for other hits such as “24K Magic” and “Uptown Funk.”
Furthermore, Mars’ residency at Park MGM was extended in December. He recently partnered with the Bellagio Hotel and Casino to launch his Pinky Ring cocktail bar and entertainment lounge.
Mars’ next string of Vegas performances will be at the Dolby Live at Park MGM. The dates span from June through September.
