A new collective of Māori organisations working to tackle gambling harm say more needs to be done for Māori gamblers.

Te Kāhui Mokoroa spokesperson Shannon Hanrahan says the industry profits continue to rise while the levels of harm whānau experience are also increasing.

The 2020 Household Lifestyle Survey indicated Māori were more than three times more likely to be moderate or high-risk gamblers than non-Māori and non-Pasifika groups.

He says he sees the harmful impacts of gambling every day in his Opotiki community, including no kai on the table, no shoes and clothing for kids, and rent not being paid.

In Aotearoa 74 percent of the amount lost to pokies comes from areas of high deprivation which receive 12 percent of the community grants.

Te Kāhui Mokoroa wants health spending reoriented towards prevention and early intervention.

Te Kāhui Mokoroa is comprised of the following organisations:

– Hāpai Te Hauora

– Poutiri Wellness

– Te Rangihaeata Oranga Trust

– Purapura Whetu
