The NFL allows its players to gamble on sports, as long as they don’t bet on the league they play in.

Gambling is just as risky for pro athletes as it is for average Joes though, and a new report from Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio illustrates how problematic it can be.

According to Florio, one NFL player–who is not identified in the story–lost $8 million in wagers in 2022.

Assuming Florio’s report is true, even if the unnamed player is betting according to NFL rules and is avoiding wagering on league events, losing that much money is still a massive problem.

While the NFL does allow players to bet, any non-players are prohibited. The league is heavily partnered with Caesars Entertainment, DraftKings and FanDuel, and we don’t see those relationships ending any time soon.

It will be interesting to see if the NFL revisits its current policy on player gambling though.
