Brentford plan gambling talks with players after Toney suspension

Brentford players set for betting lessons as club plan talks on gambling after Ivan Toney’s eight-month ban for 232 breaches of rules

  • Toney has been slapped with a hefty suspension after his several rule breaks
  • Brentford are now set to hold talks with the rest of their players on gambling
  • Players will be given a live Q&A to test their knowledge on the subject of betting

Brentford plan to hold talks with their players about gambling on football after Ivan Toney’s eight-month ban.

Toney, 27, was punished by the FA last month after admitting 232 breaches of betting rules. Now Brentford are keen to ensure the rest of their squad are clued up on the rules.

Bees owner Matthew Benham’s background is in professional gambling, and director of football Phil Giles worked for Benham’s company Smartodds.

Mail Sport understands players are set to be given a live Q&A, testing their knowledge on what they are allowed to do in relation to betting.

One of Toney’s breaches, for example, included telling a friend he would be starting in his club’s next match.

Toney will not be allowed to play again until January but can return to training on September 17. The striker believes the FA investigation, which saw him charged in November but banned only last month, was done in a ‘spiteful’ way and that missing last year’s World Cup was a bigger punishment than his eight-month suspension.

‘People try to break people down,’ Toney told Kick Game. ‘How it came out… it was kind of like, “Get it out now so you don’t go away with England”.

‘Then all of a sudden they want to wait until the end of the season… but it is what it is.’
