Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski says the team personnel has been preaching to Browns players the importance of not breaching the NFL’s gambling rules. In recent years, the NFL has been leaning toward fully embracing legal sports betting as a part of the business.
While fans now have far more opportunities to bet on NFL games, NFL players and team personnel are strictly prohibited from betting on any games. In 2022, Calvin Ridley was suspended for the entire year over betting on NFL games.
This offseason, the NFL suspended five more players over betting on NFL games, while one player is under investigation.
Browns HC Stefanski: We don’t want players suspended
“Yes, often. Yeah, because we take it really seriously.
You could ask the players. We’ve talked a lot about it throughout this offseason. Just because you’re teaching off of things that are happening around our game and happening with other teams, and we don’t want to lose a guy for any reason.
We don’t want them to get injured. We don’t want to lose a guy for breaking a rule of any sort. So you have to educate them on the rules because there is some things that are new, as you know, with sports gambling.
So part of my job and our job with this organization is to educate our players. We’re going to spend more time on it. We talked about it yesterday. We’re going to spend more time on it this afternoon as well,” Stefanski said, via the team’s press release.
In 2022, the Browns missed out on the playoffs but it was a challenging season as quarterback Deshaun Watson was suspended for 11 games and looked rusty when he returned to action. In 2023, the Browns will be hoping to bounce back and contend for the Super Bowl.
