Police in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam on Wednesday afternoon announced that they had arrested and initiated legal proceedings against 16 Vietnamese and two South Koreans for organizing gambling at the Sheraton Nha Trang Hotel & Spa in Nha Trang City.

The defendants included Ngo Van Chuyen, a resident of Nha Trang, Thoong Tau Vay from Dong Nai Province, and Jo Wan Su and Shin Jea Ho, both South Koreans.

Police officers determined that these four individuals were the masterminds and leaders of the gambling ring.

In addition, 14 other individuals implicated in the case, including cashiers, receptionists, and card dealers, were apprehended.

The arrest and prosecution were the result of a police raid on the Gameclub Lucky facility, located in the basement of the 5-star Sheraton Nha Trang Hotel & Spa on Tran Phu Street in Nha Trang on the evening of April 15.

There, police officers caught many individuals gambling and seized over US$408,000, more than HKD15,000 ($1,915), 10,000 Korean won ($7.6), and over VND681 million ($29,000) in cash, as well as various machines, documents, and pieces of evidence associated with the organization and facilitation of gambling activities.

A preliminary investigation showed that the Lucky Gameclub facility commenced official operations in early March, catering to foreign visitors for gambling purposes. 

Jo Wan Su and Ngo Van Chuyen were the founders of the establishment, which was registered as a business focused on prize-winning video games, a legal model for foreigners as per Vietnamese law.

However, it was actually an organization designed for foreign individuals to engage in gambling activities.

Jo and Chuyen hired Thoong Tau Vay as a manager, along with several other individuals in charge of personnel management, card dealing, desk supervision, cashier duties, and security guard roles.
