Last month, an array of gambling-related suspensions handed out to several NFL players shook the football world.
It now appears more suspensions and punishments could soon be on the way.
According to ESPN’s David Purdum this Monday, the NFL is investigating a “second wave” of potential violations of its gambling policy.
Five players, including Lions’ 2022 first-round pick Jameson Williams, received lengthy suspensions for various gambling-related activities as a result of last month’s investigation.
But while Williams received six games as punishment for betting on non-NFL games, fellow Lions Quintez Cephus, C.J. Moore and Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney were suspended indefinitely. Cephus, Moore, and Toney’s indefinite suspensions reportedly resulted from betting on NFL games.
While little is currently known about the scope of the league’s newest investigation, David Highhill – the NFL’s VP and general manager of its sports betting department – told ESPN this week that there’s been no evidence of game fixing.
“We have seen no evidence of game manipulation to date,” Highhill wrote.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on this evolving situation.
