Ahmedabad: A 21-year-old youth, a student of the Vishwakarma Government College in Ahmedabad’s Chandkheda, died by suicide in his hostel room on Sunday evening, police said.

The youth has been identified as Prabhat Sharma, a resident of Deepmala Apartments in the industrial town of Vapi in the Valsad district of Gujarat. He was in Semester 2 of his Bachelor of Engineering course at the college.

He committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his hostel room as he had incurred a huge debt due to his habit of online gambling, said police as reported by TOI.

Sharma also left a suicide noted in his room where he explicitly stated the debts to be the reason behind his extreme step, officers of Chandkheda police said.

During investigation, police found that Sharma was a brilliant student who scored above distinction marks in both Classes 10 and 12 and also in the first semester of his engineering course, reported TOI.

He began playing online games a year ago and gradually shifted to online gambling and he started losing money rapidly, said a police officer.

The police officer said that when he visited his home Vapi on August 27, he told his mother that he could not focus on his studies due to his online gambling habit.

The officer further said that Sharma’s suicide note mentioned that he had borrowed money from many people and also requested his father to pay off the debts if someone approaches them.

“If someone comes and asks for money, please pay them,” Sharma wrote in his suicide note addressing his father.

After returning from Vapi, he had allegedly blocked his father’s number along with many others, as he slipped into depression. His father had to call his classmates to inquire about him, said the officer as reported by TOI.

On Sunday, he was in his hostel room throughout the day. He reportedly committed suicide when his hostel mates went out in the afternoon. When they returned in the evening, they found him hanging.
