Politics latest: PM promises to 'work day and night' after Tories lose over 1,000 council seats; 'chilling suppression' of coronation protesters

Tories accused of ‘breaking the economy’ – as PM says Labour ‘busy plotting coalitions’

Sir Keir Starmer then accuses the Tories of “breaking the economy”, adding they are “blaming other people and not listening to the country”.

Rishi Sunak reiterates that the Conservatives had inherited the biggest deficient in the G7 from a Labour government.

Sir Keir hits back that large parts of the country had rejected Mr Sunak’s government last week – but the prime minister is still pushing ahead with “protecting oil and gas profits” rather than freezing bills.

The Labour leader then accuses the Tories of being a “tired, worn out government fronted by a prime minister who boasts of never having had a working class friend”.

He asks how he thinks the Tories can provide the answers Britain needs when “the whole country has told them” they are the problem.

Mr Sunak admits that he was a “teenager” when he made that comment – but insists “we all” say things we shouldn’t in youth.

“He’ll know what I’m talking about, because I think in his 40s he was still talking about abolishing the monarchy.”

This creates a furore in the Commons.

“It’s the same old guff from him every week,” the PM says. “All politics, and no action.

“While he’s busy plotting coalitions, we’re getting on and delivering for the British people.”
