Greg Sankey releases statement on ongoing gambling investigation surrounding Alabama baseball

Greg Sankey has addressed the ongoing gambling investigation surrounding Alabama baseball following the decisions from multiple states to suspend betting on Crimson Tide baseball games.

The situation first arose Friday when reports of suspicious wagering activity were noted in regard to Alabama’s game against LSU. Ohio was the first state to halt betting on games involving Alabama with New Jersey following suit on Wednesday.

Late Wednesday evening, the commissioner of the SEC released the following statement on the situation:

We are aware of reports related to the suspension of wagering on Alabama baseball games. We will continue to monitor available information and any regulatory activity.

As many states have acted to legalize sports gambling, we are reminded of the threats gambling may pose to competitive integrity. Together with our member universities, we will continue to emphasize the importance of regulating, overseeing and providing education related to sports gambling activity.

Alabama lost Friday’s game to LSU, 8-6, before getting swept in the 3-game series. The Crimson Tide begin another 3-game series against Vanderbilt Thursday night.
