The University of New Orleans has suspended four men’s basketball players as part of what the school’s athletic department deemed an ongoing investigation.
According to a report from Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman on Wednesday, four of the Privateers’ top five scorers have not played for the team for the past eight games, with both the university and the NCAA currently looking into sports gambling concerns.
UNO athletic director Vince Granito referenced the report and confirmed an ongoing “internal investigation for team rule violations.” Neither Granito or men’s basketball head coach Stacy Hollowell gave further comment on the reasons for the suspensions.
The suspensions were handed down after New Orleans suffered a 74-58 home loss Jan. 27 to Incarnate Word. Since then, the have lost eight consecutive games while dressing out eight players. UNO is tied for last place in the Southland Conference.
The four players under investigation — James White, Jah Short, Dae Dae Hunter, and Jamond Vincent — were all in the starting lineup on Jan. 27. By the team’s next game against Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond on Feb. 1, freshman forward MJ Thomas was the only remaining starter who continued to dress out and play for the Privateers.
New Orleans (4-25, 2-16 Southland Conference) is set to face UTRGV in Edinburg, Texas on Saturday before wrapping up the season Monday night at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Privateers are the fifth college basketball program this season to be publicly linked to potential gambling violations. Temple men’s basketball was the subject of a high profile gambling probe last season.
