The NFL announced they have suspended five players for gambling on games in the 2022 season- with punishments set to take effect in the upcoming 2023 season.
According to a league statement, three players have been indefinitely suspended for the 2023 season, as all of them will sit out for the entire year. Those players are wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore of the Detroit Lions as well as Shaka Toney of the Washington Commanders.
In addition, two other Lions players, both of whom are rookies received lighter punishments. Star receiver Jameson Williams and fellow pass catcher Stanley Berryhill were suspended for the first six games of the 2023 season.
After their suspension was announced, the Detroit Lions released Cephus and Moore from the team while also criticizing Williams and Berryhill.
‘As a result of an NFL investigation, it came to our attention that a few of our players had violated the league’s gambling policy,’ Detroit Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager Brad Holmes said in a statement.
‘These players exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules. We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately.
‘We are disappointed by the decision making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward.’
In the NFL’s statement, they highlighted one part of their gambling policy prohibiting anyone in the league from, ‘engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility.’
The league statement added that a review found, ‘no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way.’
Further reporting from NBC Sports revealed that, ‘several Lions staff members in various departments were fired last month for violating the gambling policy.’
Staff members of NFL teams aren’t allowed to bet on anything related to the league – including games and postseason awards. Like the players, they’re also not allowed to gamble at all while at the team facility or traveling for team business.
