Sports gambling has grown in America since the 2018 Supreme Court ruling, but across the pond, one of the world’s biggest leagues has already begun a crackdown.

The Premier League — the highest level of professional soccer in the United Kingdom — alongside its 20 teams have decided to outlaw gambling sponsorships at the front of matchday shirts following the 2025-26 season.

It’s the first league to administer the ban voluntarily, with Italy’s Serie A and Spain’s LaLiga both having a similar ban driven by government legislation. The league’s decision undercut the UK government’s review of gambling laws that is expected to be published later this month.

The Premier League’s statement on Thursday included that it will work with other sports on a “code for responsible gambling sponsorship.”
