Three charged in alleged illegal gambling operation

JOPLIN, Mo. — An alleged illegal gambling operation in Joplin is shut down and three people are charged in the case.

Joplin police say they seized 47 gambling devices from the business “Spin Hitters” on East 7th Street last week.

According to the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office, Spin Hitters was organized in July of 2023 as a convenience store.

Jasper County Prosecutor Theresa Kenney filed charges against three employees who were present at the business when officers served the search warrant.

Pooja Rani, Ashish Ashish, and Gurjeet Singh have all been charged with one count each of promoting gambling in the first degree.

According to court records, along with the 47 gambling devices, officers also seized approximately $4,400.

All three defendants are citizens of India and are in the U.S. on temporary visas. JPD gave the defendants’ citizenship status as a reason to request denial of bond. However, all three have bonded out of jail and were given a November 6 hearing date.
