Two weeks after Governor R N Ravi returned the Bill banning online gambling and regulating online games to the government for its consideration, the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed the same legislation on Thursday.
Chief Minister M K Stalin, who reintroduced the Bill, said that the state government has “the right to streamline, regulate, and protect” people living in its jurisdiction.
The Governor had promulgated the Bill banning online gambling as an ordinance before sending it back to the Assembly on March 6, 2023, intensifying tension between the Raj Bhavan and government.
Reintroducing the Bill, titled ‘Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill, 2022,’ Stalin said the legislation was formulated based on the suggestions made by a committee led by retired Madras High Court judge K Chandru and the consultations with students, parents and teachers.
