Ahmedabad: The city, for the last nine days in the run-up to the Janmasthami festival, reported one case of gambling every two hours. Between Aug 18 and Aug 26, the city reported 113 cases with 632 people caught for gambling.
The official data released by the city police states that the cops also received Rs 23.24 lakh in cash from these raids.
The cops said that on average, the city reported 12.5 cases per day with an average of 11 persons caught in every gambling raid.
The cops stated that they also seized Rs 36.76 lakh worth of other items, such as mobile phones. In some cases, the vehicles belonging to the people who were gambling were also seized.
Of the 113 cases reported in nine days, the eastern part of the city reported 69 cases, while the western part of the city reported 40 cases. Four cases were reported by the crime branch.
According to the data, the maximum number of gambling cases, 33, were reported from areas like Bapunagar, Gomtipur, Rakhial, Amraiwadi, Khokhra, Nikol, Odhav, and Ramol, while the lowest, 2, were reported from Walled City areas of Kalupur, Shaherkotda, Gaikwad Haveli and Khadia.
The officials said that many people prefer to travel out of the city, especially to farmhouses, for gambling.
